Kenmore resident, Kenmore Community Club board member, and longtime educator in the Northshore School district, Fernell Miller, was recognized by KCTS, the local PBS affiliate, on Feb. 7, 2024 for the Golden Apple Awards.
Growing up as the only Black student in many spaces, she turned her struggles into strength. Fernell was honored for her 38 years in education, creating inclusive environments where racially isolated kids feel seen, heard, and belong. Her impact extends beyond the classroom, shaping future leaders.
A dedicated PE teacher and racial justice leader, Fernell is the force behind The Root Of Us, a consulting business she started to help educators, businesses, corporations and other institutions better understand and recognize outdated and biased policies, curricula and materials that can damage potential.
