The latest design refinements for the Sound Transit 522/NE145th Bus Rapid Transit line will not impact the Yakima Fruit Market as had been feared in earlier drafts of the design.
The changes in Sound Transit’s design were revealed at the Oct. 22, 2020 Bothell City Council meeting. Following a community outcry about the potential loss of the 81-year-old fruit stand the City of Bothell, Sound Transit began exploring design options that would minimize or avoid impacts to the market.
The result is that the transit agency planners were able to refine the design so that the fruit stand would not be affected at all while still achieving project goals for business access transit lanes.
The refined design will include a northbound bus-only lane that makes use of the current center-turn lane. This will improve speed and reliability for future bus operations where it will be needed most, according to the transit agency.
