“Taxpayer” has long been a loaded word in U.S. politics, and tax policy plays a critical role in local systems of education across the country. This talk will examine the ways in which this seemingly simple word can often be racially coded and how the creation and structure of certain tax policies have helped entrench racial and economic inequality in the history of public education as well as today.
